Widgawa rests on the banks of the West River,
just upstream from Charlton Lake;
at the heart of the La Cloche Mountains,
in Northern Ontario, Canada.
The resort sits among silver birch,
trembling aspen, and old growth white pine:
500 m east of Highway 6, on Widgawa Road,
16 kms (10 miles) south of Espanola,
98 kms (60 miles) north of South Baymouth, 
Manitoulin Island, and the Chicheemaun Ferry.
480 km (300 miles) north west of downtown Toronto.

and outfit you for any back-country adventure by Canoe to renowned Killarney Provincial Park
We can take you to the boundaries by Water Taxi  so you may begin your trip, right in the park.
Widgawa offers a range of historic cabins: sleeping from 2 to 10 adults each,
plus overnight camping and wilderness camping along the West River and in the Widgawa woods.

Several artists of the Canadian Group of Seven painted some of their best 
known works in the immediate area, e.g.  example Carmichaels: "Light & Shadow"  and several others of Grace, Nellie, Frood and Cranberry Lakes. 
Franklin Carmichael stayed and built a cabin on Cranberry Lake, and A.J. Casson continued to visit and used to stay at Widgawa Lodge.  He painted one of his best known works, White Pine nearby at Dreamers' Rock. 

Reseach done over 40 years of back-country camping by Sue & Jim Waddington, to identify locations
of paintings done by the Group of Seven, resulted in finding over 70 sites close to Widgawa; and the creation of another work of art, their beautiful book In The Footsteps of the Group of Seven
While at Widgawa, you may adventure the back-country and see the breath-taking scenery of the white La Cloche mountains and the crystal clear lakes of Killarney Provincial Park.

You may paddle deep blue waters, between white quartzite hills, explore enchanting islands, climb pink granite ridges with stunning views and ancient pines, and hike through old growth forest.
You may experience the awesome peace of the unspoiled wilderness, be in harmony with nature, get to know the quiet of still waters reflecting the northern stars.
You may even get to witness a concert of Northern Lights, while staying at Widgawa.

Widgawa welcomes all peaceful nature respecting individuals and groups as day visitors and staying guests
at the lodge, cottages or camping.

We do accommodate fishing, as local fish stocks are at an all time high in the West River and local lakes.

Widgawa's focus is the preservation of the lands natural features & the towering old growth forests of white pine, 
as a wildlife sanctuary on the West River to Charlton Lake; and the finely balanced development of an eco resort
that offers the experience of unspoiled nature among clear water lakes, snow white quartzite hills, habituated
only by wolf and moose, bobcat and lynx, under skies of eagle, breathtaking sunset and the awesome Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights);to witness if you are here and lucky!

A Land of Visions and Dreams, our neighbours, the WhiteFish River First Nation aptly name Birch Island and area. Other interesting and provocative First People names for local places include: Dreamers Rock, Heaven's Gate and Manitoulin Island (Island of God).

The name Widgawa  ("Widge-ah-waw" or "Wee-Gaw-Wah!") is Ojibwe for Friendly Meeting Place.

We got the name, we got the lodge, we got the lakes, we got the permits, the canoes and the quaintest historic rustic cottages in any mountains, anywhere; all ready for you when you arrive weary from the world.
